Jaguar XF – the 2010 police version for Plod

The first ever Police-spec XF is about to go on patrol across the Midlands. The Central Motorway Police Group, which patrols motorways across Staffordshire, Mercia and the West Midlands has bought seven high performance Police vehicles based on the award-winning Jaguar XF Diesel S model.
The Police-specification Jaguars feature the 275PS 3.0-litre Diesel S engine.
The Jaguar XF beats other contenders with a fuel economy figure of 42mpg and an excellent CO2 rating of 179 g/km. The XF’s residual value is a key factor in making it a financially sound choice for police forces. Research carried out by EurotaxGlass’s suggest the new 3.0-litre XF will retain an impressive 80 per cent of its purchase price after 12 months or 14,000 miles which makes it the best in class, and an astonishing 45 per cent of its value after three years and 60,000 miles of motoring.

BMW 530d SE

Engine 2993cc, six cylinders

Power 242bhp @ 4000rpm

Transmission Six-speed manual

Acceleration 0-62mph: 6.3secTop speed 155mph (limited)

Fuel / CO2 44.8mpg / 166g/km

Price £37,100

As for the engine, the 3-litre diesel is as powerful and frugal as you’d expect of a BMW. It will reach 62mph in 6.3sec, return 44.8mpg in the combined fuel-economy cycle and emit 166g/km of carbon dioxide, at a cost of £37,100. The version I drove, with the optional £1,495 eight-speed automatic gearbox, was more economical still, with even lower emissions. That will hit 60mph in 8sec, top 140mph, yet return 56.5mpg — that may look like a misprint but it’s not.

THE RIVALS
Mercedes E 350 CDI Avantgarde £35,795
For Most comfortable car in the class and the quietest too
Against Looks off-putting to some

Jaguar XF Diesel Premium Luxury 3.0 V6 £38,475
For Good fun to drive; classy interior
Against Pricy; cramped in the back

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

In two decades Alfa has gone from flair to fair. When they weren’t disappointing, Alfa’s recent cars were downright indifferent, a crime for any car maker but especially for one that built its reputation on passion.

The 1.4tb Veloce petrol model, which promised least but delivered most. As its name suggests, its engine is tiny but is turbocharged all the way to 170bhp. Yet, thanks to Alfa’s innovative Multiair engine technology, which allows flexibility in the valve timing, it is capable of close to 50mpg. The result is a car that is quick, nimble and engaging when you want to have fun, and quiet, comfortable and classy when you don’t. In other words, everything a modern Alfa should be. Even the interior, source of so many annoyances in years gone by, is stylish yet ergonomic. The build quality has taken a leap forward, too.

Volkswagen Golf GT

For Exceptional build quality, image, ride comfort
Against Dull styling, handling a little staid
Audi A3 1.8 TFSI: from £19,145.
Smooth turbo engine, but less power and sophistication than the Alfa. Beautifully built yet bland in character and driving qualities.
